While the history of live poker is debatable, with certain camps claiming the game evolved from the Persian game “As-nas” and others citing the French game “Poque” as poker’s immediate ancestor, the history of online poker is well documented and beyond dispute.

The first real money online poker hand was dealt by Planet Poker on January 1, 1998. The blinds in this Texas Hold’em match were $3/$6. Plagued by technical problems that would sometimes cause the website to be offline for days at a time, mixed with heated competition, Planet Poker quickly ceded the number one spot and is now nothing more than an internet relic.

Online poker has changed dramatically since Planet Poker’s launch in 1998. It continued to grow slowly, until the Moneymaker effect in 2003 where poker entered the mainstream. Poker took over many television broadcasts, often during prime time.

During this time there have been many highs and lows, but alas, here were are in 2015. The glory days of tables full of terrible players, huge, easy to earn cash bonuses, and set mining for a profit have passed us by.
